The Ultimate Utah State Board Kit Checklist: What You Actually Need to Pass

If there is one thing that causes more stress in esthetics school than the waxing unit, it’s The Kit.

Building your State Board kit feels overwhelming. Between the endless Ziploc bags, strict labeling requirements, and the constant fear that forgetting a single paper towel will cost you your license, it’s easy to panic.

At The Blooming Rose, we’ve helped countless students prep for their Utah (NIC) practical exam, and here is the truth: The kit is 90% of the battle. If your kit is organized correctly, the exam feels easy. If your kit is a mess, your execution will be too.

Here are the 4 key areas you must focus on to pass:

1. The "Labeling" Rule I cannot stress this enough: If it isn’t labeled, it doesn’t exist. Every single container—from your toner to your trash bag—must have a clear, legible label in English.

  • Pro Tip: Don’t just write "Cream." Write "Massage Cream" or "Moisturizer." The proctors need to know exactly what the product is intended for to ensure safety.

2. The "Wet" vs. "Dry" Sanitation You need specific setups for your sanitation.

  • EPA Disinfectant: Ensure your container is labeled "EPA Registered Disinfectant" (Check the current Candidate Information Bulletin to see if this needs to be simulated or real!).

  • Hand Sanitizer: This is your safety net. If you ever freeze up and don't know what to do next? Sanitize your hands. It gives you a moment to think and keeps you sanitary.

3. The "Big 3" Waste Bags Your kit isn't just about products; it's about waste management. You must have three distinct paper bags taped to your station:

  • Trash: (General waste like cotton rounds, tissues).

  • Soiled Linens: (Towels, headbands, fabric).

  • To Be Disinfected: (Hard implements like tweezers or spatulas that are dropped or used).

  • Warning: Throwing a tweezer into the "Trash" bag is an instant point deduction. Practice your aim!

4. Stop Overpacking A common mistake is trying to bring your entire school locker. You only need enough product to perform the services listed on the NIC Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB). You do not need 5 different serums or a complex 3-step peel kit. Keep it simple so you aren't digging through clutter during the timed exam.
